AU softball team returns from Florida unbeaten

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team is off to its best start ever after defeating Norwich University and SUNY Purchase Saturday morning in Cocoa Beach, FL. With the 10-1 win over Norwich and 17-3 victory over SUNY Purchase, AU won all 12 games on its season-opening Spring Break trip to Florida. The 12-0 record is the best start to a season in the team’s 16-year history.

Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) tied a school single-game record with seven RBIs in the win over Norwich. LeBarron went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and run scored. Sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) earned her seventh pitching victory in seven starts in Cocoa Beach, in a contest that was stopped after six innings. Cary tossed four shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. In seven starts in Florida, the Monroe Community College transfer allowed two runs (one earned) and nine hits while striking out 41.

Freshman Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) tossed an inning of scoreless relief before giving way to freshman Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka), who fanned three and allowed an unearned run in the sixth.

Junior Jordan Siefer (Sylvania, OH/Sylvania Southview) and junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) each had three hits, three runs scored and a stolen base, with Siefer knocking in three runs. Sophomore Brittany Loucks (Addison, NY/Addison) had an RBI double and senior catcher Nicole Messura (Albion, NY/Albion) had a hit and scored a run.

LeBarron continued her torrid hitting in the game against SUNY Purchase, going 2-for-2 with a three-run homerun and six RBIs. Siefer went 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and three RBIs and sophomore Madison Snyder (Medford, NY/ Patchogue-Medford) had two doubles among her three hits, scored three times and drove in three.

Junior leftfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI; Hedrick had an RBI triple; junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) had a triple, run scored and two RBIs; and freshmen Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) and Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) each went 1-for-3, with Netta driving in a run and Shepherd scoring twice.

The game was stopped after five innings, with freshman Lydia de Martino (Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) throwing three innings to get the win. She allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out three and walking two. Scanlon struck out each of the six batters she faced over the final two innings.

AU is in action next on March 25 with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Pitt-Bradford.
