Two AU softball players honored by the Empire 8, ECAC

ALFRED, NY — Two members of the Alfred University softball team have earned weekly honors from the Empire 8 Conference the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) was named Empire 8 and ECAC Upstate Player of the Week and sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) was named Empire 8 and ECAC Upstate Pitcher of the Week. The pair was honored for their play in 10 games last week in Cocoa Beach, FL.

LeBarron batted .613 (19-for-31) with nine runs scored, five doubles, and 26 runs batted in as Alfred won all 10 games it played during the week. She went 4-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI in a Saxons’ win over PSU-Allegheny; was 4-for-4 with a double, triple, and a school single-game record-tying seven RBIs in a victory over Norwich; and finished 2-for-2 with a three-run homerun and six RBIs in a win over SUNY Purchase. LeBarron finished the 12-game Florida trip with 31 RBI.

Cary won all six starts she made last week, yielding only one earned run on nine hits while striking out 36 batters in 25 innings. The transfer from Monroe Community College began her AU career by no-hitting Daniel Webster on March 8 in Florida and in seven starts this year is 7-0 with one earned run allowed and 41 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Alfred’s 12-0 record in Florida marks the best start to a season in the softball team’s 16-year history. Alfred outscored its opponents 123-19 in Cocoa Beach. The Saxons play next on March 25 with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Pitt-Bradford.
