Baker, Agro wrap up AU swimming careers at NCAAs
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A pair of Alfred University seniors wrapped up their careers Saturday at NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships.
Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) and Brian Agro (Gray, ME/Cheverus), Alfred's lone representatives at the national championship meet, led the Saxons to a 29th place team finish. Baker ended his career with a 21st-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.01) and Agro concluded his with a 25th place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.41).
The NCAA championships were held Wednesday through Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. Baker and Agro each earned All-American honorable mention at the championships -- Baker in two events and Agro in one.
Baker earned honorable mention All-American certification by placing 11th in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday (50.47 seconds) and 13th in the 200-yard freestyle on Thursday (1:40.46). His time of 1:40.28 in the 200-yard free during his preliminary heat set a new school record.
Agro earned All-American honorable mention by placing 10th in the 100-yard breast on Friday (56.20 seconds).
Baker earned All-American honors for the third and fourth times in his career -- he earned honorable mention in the 100-yard back in 2007 and 20098 -- while Agro received the honors for the first time in his career.
