Nazareth sweeps AU softball team

PITTSFORD, NY – The Alfred University softball team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Saturday, swept in a doubleheader at Empire 8 Conference foe Nazareth.

AU (14-2, 0-2 Empire 8) dropped the first game, 1-0, then lost the second contest 6-1.

In the opener, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Nazareth plated an unearned run off AU starter, sophomore Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke). Carey, who came into the game with a perfect 7-0 record, allowed four hits while striking out five and walking a pair. Nazareth starter Lisa Nazarenko earned the victory, allowing two hits over seven innings while striking out 13.

Junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and junior leftfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) each had base hits for Alfred. Lizzie Barlow drove in Katie Valerio with the winning run for Nazareth.

In the second game, Nazareth scored three in the top of the third to break a scoreless tie, then added another in the fourth to go ahead, 4-0. After Alfred scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth, Nazareth tallied a pair in the fifth to close out the scoring.

Mather had a hit and drove in junior rightfielder Lauren Peterson (Aningdon, MD/Harford Tech) with Alfred’s lone run and Figallo had two singles. Nazarenko had a pair of hits, including a homerun, and drove in two, while Laura Persico was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run for Nazareth.

Freshman hurler Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) took the loss for AU, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over four innings. Kelly Kocher got the win for Nazareth, overcoming seven walks and six hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 4, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against visiting Ithaca. The Saxons play a 1 p.m. doubleheader the following day, April 5, against visiting Utica. Both Empire 8 twinbills will be played at Hornell High School.
