AU women’s lacrosse team drops Empire 8 opener to RIT

ROCHESTER, NY – Host RIT defeated the Alfred University women’s lacrosse team, 14-4, Wednesday afternoon in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.

RIT (5-3, 1-0 Empire 8) led 6-1 after one half then outscored the previously unbeaten Lady Saxons 8-3 after intermission. For the game, RIT outshot AU 33-22 and held a 43-34 edge in groundballs.

Junior defender Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg), junior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), sophomore attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and junior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) each had a goal for AU, with Button picking up a team-leading six groundballs. Junior defender Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) and junior midfielder Kate Simonds (Park City, UT/Park City) each had an assist for AU (3-1, 0-1 Empire 8).

Ashely Pezze (game-high eight groundballs) and Danielle Previ each had two goals and an assist to lead RIT.

Sophomore goalie Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made 10 saves for Alfred, while RIT netminder Kelsey Evans stopped 11 shots.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at home against Empire 8 foe St. John Fisher.
