Alfred University’s Baker, Chambliss named top swimmer, diver in Empire 8

ALFRED, NY — Two members of the Alfred University men’s swimming and diving team have swept the top year-end awards presented by the Empire 8 Conference.

Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport), a senior, was named the Empire 8 Swimmer of the Year, while junior Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) was named the conference’s Diver of the Year.

Baker is a four-time All-American who earned honorable mention All-American certification in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle at this year’s NCAA Division III championships. He won Empire 8 titles in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke this season and swam on Empire 8 champion and conference record-setting 200- and 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Chambliss won Empire 8 titles in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the conference championship meet. He had previously been named Diver of the Meet at the Empire 8 championships, which are held in conjunction with the Upper New York Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championship meet.

The Saxons won their third straight UNYSCSA and Empire 8 championships this season and tied a school record with 28 straight dual-meet wins, a streak that began in February 2006.
