AU men’s lacrosse team beats Cazenovia

SYRACUSE, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team beat host Cazenovia, 12-7, Wednesday night in a game played at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.

After a close first period, which ended with the score tied at 1-1, Alfred (8-2) outscored Cazenovia 9-1 over the next two quarters to take a commanding 10-2 lead at the end of three.

Sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) each scored three goals for the Saxons, who improved their record to 8-2 with the non-conference win. All of Zoyhofski’s and Gill’s scores came in the second an third periods.

Junior midfielder Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had two goals, while freshman midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown), sophomore defender Greg Leiby (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and freshman attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) each scored one. Freshman attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had two assists and Gill and Eaton each had one.
Gareth Fabian had three goals and Pat Sauers added two to lead Cazenovia (5-5).

Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) played 56 minutes in goal for AU and made eight saves while allowing six goals. Freshman Steve Bonura (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) played the final four minutes in net and allowed one goal while stopping one shot.

Alex Iannicello started in goal for Cazenovia and played 47 minutes, allowing 10 goals and making eight saves. Travis Carruthers played 13 minutes in net and allowed two scores.

Alfred (1-2 in Empire 8 action) resumes conference play on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at Utica College.
