AU women’s lacrosse team beats Hartwick to end Empire 8 winless streak

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Hartwick College, 13-8, Friday afternoon. With the win, the Saxons ended a 24-game losing streak in Empire 8 Conference play, which dated back five years.

Sophomore attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had eight goals and an assist as AU claimed an Empire 8 victory for the first time since beating RIT on April 15, 2004, With the win, AU improves to 4-3 on the season (1-3 Empire 8).
Alfred outshot the visiting Hawks, 23-15, in the first half to take a 9-6 lead at intermission.

Hartwick scored 5:23 into the second half to close to within two goals, at 9-7, but that’s as close as the Hawks would get as Alfred scored the next three to pull away. Hartwick made it 12-8 with just over five minutes left before Adams closed out the game’s scoring with 40 seconds left.

Sophomore midfielder Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) had a goal and two assists for Alfred, while junior attack Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and junior defender Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) each had a goal and an assist.

Junior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and sophomore midfielder Jennifer Omilanowicz (Mexico, NY/Mexico) had three and two assists, respectively, while junior defender Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) and sophomore midfielder Allyson Klopp (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) each had a goal for AU.

Stephanie Nutt, Tiffanie Bishop and Emily Walsh each scored two goals to pace Hartwick (1-7, 0-2 Empire 8), with Nutt adding an assist.

Sophomore Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made 12 saves in goal for Alfred. Jen Kaye stopped eight shots for Hartwick.

Alfred is in next on Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at home against Utica.
