AU women’s lacrosse team falls to Utica
The Lady Saxons (4-4, 1-4 Empire 8) played a competitive second half, scoring three goals to Utica’s four, but their undoing came in the first half. AU allowed nine goals while only scoring one in the first 30 minutes, with Utica outshooting AU 20-7. For the game, Utica outshot Alfred 30-21 and put 29 shots on goal to only 14 for Alfred.
Alfred’s lone goal of the first half came with eight seconds remaining when sophomore attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored on an assist from junior attack Emily Tobin (Penfield, NY/Penfield). Adams had two goals on the afternoon. Tobin scored once off an assist by sophomore midfielder Elyse Caldwell, (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell), who finished with two assists and a game-high seven groundballs.
Junior defender Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) assisted on a second-half goal by sophomore midfielder Jennifer Omilanowicz (Mexico, NY/Mexico). Freshmen defender Hannah Scott (Braintree, VT/Randolph Union) and junior midfielder Amanda Sullivan (Lexington, MA/Lexington) each picked up four groundballs for the Lady Saxons.
Tammy Kohanski scored three goals while Jackie Vicencio, Kim Rigney and Julianne Schultheiss each scored a pair to pace Utica (6-4, 3-2 Empire 8).
Sophomore goalie Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made 16 saves for Alfred, while Shelby Barbay made 10 saves for Utica.
Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 18, at 4 p.m. at Elmira College.
