AU softball team sweeps Empire 8 foe Elmira

ELMIRA, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader from host Elmira College Saturday afternoon. Alfred took the opener, 5-0, then won the second game, 11-3, to improve to 4-2 in league play (18-2 overall).

Sophomore pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) earned victories in both games. She struck out eight and allowed three hits in the first game, notching her fourth shutout of the year. The Saxons provided all the offense she would need in the second contest, scoring seven in the bottom of the first in a game that was stopped after five innings.

Junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell), senior catcher Nicole Messura (Albion, NY/Albion) and sophomore designated player Madison Snyder (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) each hit homeruns in the first game. Rollins and Messura finished with two RBIs and freshman leftfielder Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) slammed a pair of homeruns (her team-leading fifth and sixth of the year) in the second game. Folts finished with three hits in three at-bats, scored three runs and drove in four. Junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning East) went 2-for-3 with a homerun and a double and drove in three. Snyder had three hits, drove in two and scored a run, and freshman outfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) had a hit and scored two runs.

Cary went five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four. With wins in both games, she improved her record to 11-1. On the year, Cary has posted a 1.09 ERA while holding opponents to a .157 batting average and striking out 73.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, April 14, with a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Wells College. The games, played at Hornell High School, begin at 3:30 p.m.
