ALFRED, NY — Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke), a sophomore on the Alfred University softball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Cary was honored for her play last week, when she won both ends of a doubleheader at Empire 8 foe Elmira College. Cary hurdled her fourth shutout of the season in a 5-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader, allowing three hits and striking out eight while walking two. In the second game, an 11-3 win in five innings, Cary allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four.

With the two wins, Cary improved to 11-1 on the season. Her eared run average is 1.09 and she has struck out 73 batters while holding opponents to a .157 batting average. Cary was also honored for her play last week by being named Division III Softball Newsletter’s Northeast Region Pitcher of the Week.

Alfred (18-2, 4-2 Empire 8) is in action next this afternopon, April 14, for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at home against non-conference opponent Wells College. The games are being played at Hornell High School
