Alumna to exhibit work at Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art
4/16/09

Contemporary ceramic artist Virginia Scotchie will be featured in a solo exhibit beginning Friday at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. In what she calls ceramic abstractions, Ms. Scotchie takes inspiration from everyday objects and sculpts forms that are intended to be experienced on a visual rather than functional level. She works with bold colors and textures, and has developed custom glazes to create metallic finishes and unusual surfaces.

A professor of art at the University of South Carolina, where she heads the ceramics area, Ms. Scotchie holds a B.A. degree in sociology and religion from the University of North Carolina and a master of fine arts degree from Alfred University in New York. She has been a faculty member at West Virginia University and Indiana University, and an artist-in-residence in Italy, Taiwan, Australia and the Netherlands.

Ms. Scotchie will be at the Gertrude Herbert April 24 for an informal gallery talk and reception beginning at 6 p.m. For more on the artist and her work, see http://virginiascotchie.c...
