AU softball team splits with RIT
AU (21-3, 5-3 Empire 8) had to rally to win the first game after squandering a four-run lead. Up 4-0 in the sixth, Alfred allowed RIT to score five runs to take a one-run advantage. The lead was short-lived, as the Saxons plated four in the bottom half of the sixth. Junior center fielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NY/Ridgewood) and junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) each hit two-run homeruns for the Saxons.
The homerun by Folts was her seventh of the season, which tied a school single-season record. She would hit her record-breaking eighth round-tripper of the year in the second game.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) set RIT down in order in the seventh to earn the win in relief of sophomore starter Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke). Scanlon entered the game in the sixth with Alfred leading 4-2 and the bases loaded with two outs but was unable to hold the lead as RIT used two singles to score three and pull ahead. Folts finished 3-for-3 with a double, homerun, a run scored and three RBIs. Senior catcher Nicole Messura (Albion, NY/Albion) had two hits, including a homerun, and drove in three. Figallo was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and junior shortstop Samantha Rollins (Hornell, NY/Hornell) scored twice.
Alli Emi had three hits in four at-bats for RIT (11-15, 3-5 Empire 8) and Emily McPherson hit a two-run homer.
Cary allowed five runs (all earned) for AU, striking out seven and allowing eight hits. Carlissa Cole took the loss for RIT, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out two.
In the second game, Folts hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to erase a 3-0 AU deficit. In the bottom of the frame, RIT scored an unearned run to pull back ahead and Alfred went down in order in the seventh. Rollins went 3-for-3 for AU, while senior Caitlin Bangs (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) and Folts each scored once for the Saxons.
McPherson was 2-for-3 with a run and Jessica French had a hit and drove in two runs to pace RIT.
Freshman hurler Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) took the loss for AU. She pitched four strong innings in relief of Scanlon, who started and gave up three runs in the first. Hedrick allowed an unearned run on three hits and struck out a pair. Sarah Hamel got the complete-game win for the Tigers, allowing three runs on eight hits and fanning five.
AU plays an Empire 8 doubleheader at St. John Fisher on Sunday, April 19, at 1 p.m.
