Outdoor track and field teams compete at Empire 8 Championships

PITTSFORD — The Alfred University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed Saturday at the Empire 8 Conference championships, hosted by Nazareth College. The AU men placed fourth and the Alfred women fifth, out of five teams competing.

Junior Travis Cox (Ashaway, RI/Westerly) won an Empire 8 title and set a new conference championship record in the hammer throw (46.78 meters) and was runner-up in the discus (38.72 meters).

Sophomore Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) was second in the shot put (14.10 meters) and third in the discus (37.14 meters). Freshman Evan Roush (Newport, PA/Newport) was third in the triple jump (13.20 meters) and senior Erik Jezek (Orchard Park, NY/Hamburg) was fourth in both the 110-meter hurdles (16.11 seconds) and pole vault (3.85 meters).

Freshman Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) was fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.08 seconds) and junior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) was fifth in the 400-meter run (50.51 seconds). Freshman Anthony DeGroat (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), Scott, Jezek and junior Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) took fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (44.57 seconds).

Junior Megan Crimmins (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) earned the only conference crown for the AU women, winning the 1,500-meter run in 4:57.60. Crimmins also placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run (19:28.63).

Other top performers for the Alfred women were: sophomore Melissa Haahr (Tioga, NY/Owego), fourth in the 800-meter run (2:27.90); freshman Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, MA/Watertown), fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:09.36); and junior Megan McKee (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta), fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (13:03.19).

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 25, at the Big Red Invitational, hosted by Cornell University. Scott, Consolo, Jezek and Phillips (in the 4X400-meter relay) and Ross (shot put) will be competing in next weekend’s Penn Relays, April 23-25, in Philadelphia, PA.
