St. John Fisher knocks off AU men's lacrosse team

PITTSFORD, NY -- The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team lost at St. John Fisher, 16-7, Saturday afternoon.

Alfred (8-5, 1-5 Empire 8) was down by only one, 3-2, at the end of the first quarter before Fisher outscored AU 5-0 in the second period to take a commanding 8-2 halftime lead.

The Saxons pulled to within 9-4 on an unassisted goal by junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/ Gowanda) at the 7:43 mark of the third period, but Fisher would score five unanswered goals to put the game away.

Fisher (15-2, 5-2 Empire 8) held a 46-27 advantage in groundballs and won 20 of 27 faceoffs. For the game, the Saxons were hurt by committing eight penalties which led to three Fisher goals.

Gill led the Saxons with two goals, while sophomore attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and freshmen attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) each had a goal and an assst. Freshmen midfielder Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) and junior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) each chipped in with a goal for the Saxons.

Jeff Price (two assists) and Chris Schmidt (one assist) both scored three goals to lead the Cardinals.

Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) played 58:26 in goal for Alfred and made 14 saves while surrendering 16 goals. Freshman Steve Bonura (Shroeham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) played the final 1:34 in goal and made one save. Jon Cortina and Bill Buttaro combined to make 14 saves for Fisher.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 22, at 4 p.m. at home against Nazareth in the Saxons' season home finale.
