Pair of AU softball players honored by the Empire 8

ALFRED, NY — Two members of the Alfred University softball team have earned weekly honors from the Empire 8 Conference.

Junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) was named Co-Player of the Week and freshman Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) was named Pitcher of the Week. The pair was honored for their play in a doubleheader split against Empire 8 foe Ithaca College on Friday, April 24.

Folts batted .750 (6-for-8) in helping Alfred split the twinbill with the visiting Bombers. She went 4-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored, and two runs batted in as the Saxons recorded their first win in school history over Ithaca, 6-0 in the second game. Folts finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in a 7-6 Saxons’ loss in the first game. Folts, who shares the honors with RIT catcher Lisa Fronczak, also earned Empire 8 Player of the Week last week.

Hedrick threw a complete-game four-hit shutout in the Saxons’ 6-0 win over Ithaca in the second game of a doubleheader. She also tossed four innings of two-hit relief in the opener. In 11 innings, Hedrick allowed six hits, one run, and struck out 11.

AU is gearing up for this weekend’s Empire 8 Conference championship tournament Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, at Ithaca College. AU is the third seed in the double-elimination tournament and opens play Friday at 10 a.m. against second seed St. John Fisher. The winner of the tournament earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships.

The Saxons play a doubleheader at Fredonia at 3:30 p.m. today (April 27) and a 3 p.m. twinbill at Keuka on Wednesday, April 29.
