Saxons set single-season record for wins with split at Keuka
The Saxons beat Keuka, 7-3, in the first game for their 25th win, breaking the single-season record established last year. In the second game, the Storm scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest, then plated a run in the eighth to take a 4-3 extra-inning win.
In the opener, freshman pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) earned the complete-game win for the Saxons. She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out four.
AU (25-7) trailed 3-1 after four innings before junior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) belted a two-run homerun, her ninth of the year, to tie the game. The Saxons then scored four in the top of the seventh to secure the team’s record-breaking win. Sophomore designated player Madison Snyder (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) hit a double and scored twice; junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) had a hit and an RBI; and junior centerfielder Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) had a hit and scored a run
Kasie Davis took the loss for Keuka, allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven innings. Lindsay Humberstone went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Storm (20-6).
In the second game, Alfred led 3-1 going into the seventh, but after getting two outs allowed three straight hits as Keuka scored two to send the game into extra innings. AU had runners on first and third in the top of the eighth but failed to score. Keuka scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs.
Sophomore pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) pitched seven innings for Alfred, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out nine. Hedrick took the loss in relief, allowing an unearned run and striking out one. Kate Kraus earn the win for Keuka, pitching eight innings and allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three.
Hedrick went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored and Folts hit a double and scored a run. Sarah Engelbert went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and scored once for Keuka, while Domino Usiak added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
LeBarron’s run in the first game was her 30th of the year, a new school single-season record. She has also set new school marks for RBIs in a season (54) and hits in a season (53) and tied the record for doubles in a season (12). Earlier this year she set a new record for career hits and career RBIs. This marks the third straight year Alfred has broken the school record for wins in a season. The 2007 team won 23 games to shatter the previous record of 16, and that mark was broken last season when AU won 24.
The Saxons play next in the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, at Ithaca College. AU is the third seed in the double-elimination tournament and opens play Friday at 10 a.m. against second seed St. John Fisher. The winner of the tournament earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
