AU's Folts earns CoSIDA All-District academic honors

ALFRED, NY — Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), a junior second baseman on the Alfred University softball team, has earned academic honors from the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

Folts was named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District performer for the 2009 season. She was named to the Third Team for District 1, which is represented by all Division III schools in New York State, New England and colleges and universities in the eastern provinces of Canada.

A biology major sporting a 3.84 GPA, Folts is the first-ever AU softball player to earn all-academic recognition from CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine. She has already earned honors from the Empire 8 Conference and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). She was named Co-Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star by the Empire 8 and has also been named to the NFCA Northeast Region Second Team.

Folts is batting .429 with 31 runs, 45 hits and 40 RBIs. Her 11 homeruns are a new school single-season record and earlier this season she set new AU single-game records for homeruns (3) and RBIs (8). Her 12 doubles rank tied for first on the team and represent a school single-season record. A shortstop her first two seasons at Alfred, she turned in a .939 fielding percentage this season, her first at second base.
