Saxons down Brockport at ECAC tournament; storms halt game with top-seeded Union
AU (27-9), the tournament’s number three seed, was playing top-seeded Union this afternoon when severe thunderstorms halted play. Union held a 1-0 advantage with one out in the bottom of the third against Alfred when the teams were pulled off the field. Play will resume on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The loser of the Union-AU game will face RPI, which eliminated Brockport during game three, Sunday afternoon for a chance to play the winner of the Alfred-Union game for the ECAC Title.
Earlier Saturday, AU and Brockport were locked in a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth, when Rollins hit her fifth homerun of the season with one out. The Saxons added an insurance run in the sixth when senior pinch runner Caitlin Bangs (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) scored on an RBI double by freshman Sarah Scanlon (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka). Bangs was running for Rollins, who had reached on a double.
Hedrick improved to 9-5 on the year, allowing only three Brockport singles, while striking out eight. Brockport hurler Stephanie Geer allowed two earned runs on six hits while fanning seven AU batters.
Junior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Hedrick each hit doubles for AU. Ona Halladay, Rachel Maxon and Melissa Boyle each had basehits for Brockport.
The loser of the Alfred-Union game plays RPI Sunday at noon. The loser of that game is eliminated, while the winner will take on the winner of the winner Sunday morning's AU-Union game at 2 p.m. Sunday for the tournament championship. A seventh game will be held, if necessary, at 4 p.m. Sunday.
