ALFRED, NY — Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport), a recent graduate of Alfred University, and Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), a junior-to-be on the AU swimming and diving team, have earned national academic honors.

The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has named Baker a Scholar All-American and Mix an Honorable Mention Scholar All-American.

Scholar All-Americans must have a GPA of at least 3.5 and be selected to compete in the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA national championships. Baker met the CSCAA academic standards and competed in the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in April. Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have achieved NCAA “B” qualifying standards. Mix met the academic standards and earned a “B” cut as part of the Saxons’ 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays at the state championship meet in March.

Baker earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in May, graduating cum laude. He is a four-time All-American swimmer, having earned honorable mention honors at each of the last three NCAA championship meets (twice at this year’s championships) and was named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Second Team performer for the 2008-09 season. He is a four-time CSCAA Academic All-American and three-time Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Academic All-American.

Baker holds school records in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and is also a member of teams that hold school marks in the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays. He was the Empire 8 Conference Swimmer of the Year in 2007 and 2009 and helped lead the Saxons to three straight state and conference championships (2007-09).

Mix, an athletic training major, has been Alfred’s top butterflyer each of his first two seasons at AU. This season. He earned First Team Empire 8 honors in the 200-yard butterfly and Second Team honors in the 100-yard fly this season, and took second at the state championships in the 200-yard fly. Mix won Second Team Empire 8 honors in the 100-yard butterfly as a freshman in 2008.
