Self Portrait and Beyond
Saturday, Aug. 15, 1-4 p.m.
A self portrait using clay can go in many different directions, from descriptive and realistic to an interpretation of self as a metaphor in the form of plant, animal, or any object. Alternatively, the portrait can made as a mask (seeking a change of identity), or incorporated into a pot. We will look at images for inspiration and there will be a brief demonstration.
Saturday, Aug. 22, 1-4 p.m.
After collecting various small natural objects such as flowers, leaves, and sticks from the woods and fields surrounding the studio, we will make various nature studies from them out of clay. Then, after partial drying in the sun or in the kiln, the pieces will be attached and combined in unexpected ways, becoming either sculpture for the wall, animal forms, or vessel related. There will be a brief demonstration and discussion of possibilities.
Both workshops open to any level of experience, for age 15 and older. Techniques will be tailored to each individual’s ability. Clay, use of tools, and firing are included. Pieces will be fired after the class - to be picked up later.
