College of Ceramics Dean to present Bergren Forum on glass
William LaCourse, professor of glass science engineering and unit head of the NYS College of Ceramics at Alfred University, will present “Glass: Old Dog, New Tricks” on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 at the Bergren Forum at 12:10 p.m. at Powell Campus Center’s Nevins Theatre. This event is free of charge and open to the public.
LaCourse received his bachelor of science degree in engineering science and master of science degree in materials science from the State University of New York at Stonybrook in 1966 and 1967. He continued his education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1969 where he received a Ph.D. in materials science.
His current research includes scratch resistance of glasses and coatings, defects in glazes, chalcogenide and fiber optic materials, bio-active and bioresorbable materials, and accelerated ion-exchange strengthening of float glass.
The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Alfred University Division of Human Studies, meets Thursdays during each academic semester at the University. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch; coffee and tea will be available.
