Saxons, Cazenovia victorious on first day of AU men’s soccer tournament

ALFRED, NY -– Alfred University and Cazenovia were winners in the first day of action at the AU Invitational men’s soccer tournament, Saturday at Merrill Field. AU defeated Hilbert 2-0 in the first game and Cazenovia beat Thiel 5-1 in the second game.

Freshman striker Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) scored both goals in Alfred’s victory over Hilbert. His first goal, 2:30 into the contest, came on an assist from junior midfielder Kevin Morgan (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive). His second goal, assisted by freshman midfielder Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) came 10:50 into the second half.

In Alfred’s first two games, Mannino has scored all three of the Saxons’ goals. He tallied the game-winner in AU’s 1-0 season-opening win over Keuka Tuesday evening.

AU outshot Hilbert 18-5. Sophomore goalie Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) played the first 71:30 in net and made one save. Senior Pat Grimmer (Bath, NY/Haverling) played the final 18:30 and wasn’t called upon to make a save. Eric Davis six saves) and Scott Walker (one save) each played a half in goal for Hilbert.

Matt Gillis netted the hat trick in Cazenovia’s win over Thiel. His first goal, 14:43 into the game, proved to be the game-winner. David Wright had a goal and an assist and Jason Luce added a goal for the Wildcats. Thiel’s lone goal, by Hayes Smith, came 7:30 into the second half.

Hilbert (0-2) takes on Cazenovia (1-1) at 10 a.m. Sunday before Alfred (2-0) plays Thiel (2-1) at 1 p.m.
