AU football team throttles UMass-Dartmouth in season opener

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA — The Alfred University football team scored on its first three possessions of the game and cruised to a 35-6 season-opening win at University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.

AU used a balanced offensive attack in piling up 444 yards of offense (268 passing, 176 rushing) and did not turn the ball over. The Saxon defense held the host Corsairs to 214 yards, including only 71 passing, and forced a turnover.

AU sophomore quarterback Tom Secky (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns; senior tailback Vinson Hendrix (Rochester, NY/East) rushed for 122 yards and a score; and senior wideout Jared Manzer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) caught nine passes for 168 yards and three TDs. Manzer’s performance game him new AU career records for receiving yards (2,639) and touchdowns (31).

Manzer returned the opening kickoff 39 yards to the AU 49-yard line. Seven plays and 3:34 later, Hendrix capped a 51-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run. The Saxons got the ball back after UMass punted on its subsequent possession. Manzer returned the punt 21 yards to the Corsair 39-yard line and Secky capped a three-play scoring drive with a 22-yard TD pass to senior wideout Milton Harding (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City). Another punt gave Alfred the ball at its own 9-yard line and the Saxons drove 91 yards in seven plays over 3:13, with Secky connecting with Manzer on a 12-yard scoring toss.

The hosts broke their scoring drought midway through the second when Josh Marsh plowed in from a yard out. The PAT failed and Alfred led 21-6. The Saxons tallied a pair of touchdowns late in the first half to close out the game’s scoring. Manzer caught a 35-yard TD pass from Secky with 5:32 left and the pair connected again, this time from seven yards out, with 46 seconds left before intermission.

AU freshman tailback Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) ran for 62 yards in his collegiate debut, and freshman wideout Andre McCloud (Bath, NY/Haverling caught a 37-yard pass, made three tackles on defense and had a 23-yard kickoff return.

Sophomore strong safety Alec Currier (Peru, NY/Peru) led the AU defense with eight tackles and a forced fumble. Sophomore linebacker Nick Clark (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) added eight tackles and sophomore end Marcellus Jones (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had six. Freshman tackle Mike Raplee (Dundee, NY/Dundee) had five tackles, including one for loss and a half-sack, and sophomore linebacker Wes Smith (Turbotville, PA/Muncy) had an interception.

James Moore rushed for a team-best 80 yards to lead the UMass offense. Chris Pinheiro threw for 71 yards and Hymlai Lamasere caught four passes for 22 yards.

Darrien Furr had a game-high 13 tackles, including one for loss, to pace the Corsair defense. John Cardasco added 10 stops, including 3.5 for loss.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. at Fairleigh Dickenson-Florham in Madison, NJ.
