Thiel beats AU in shootout, will play Hilbert for tournament title

ALFRED, NY – Thiel College will play Hilbert College Sunday evening for the championship of the Alfred University Invitational women’s soccer tournament.

Thiel defeated host Alfred, 5-4, in a penalty kick shootout after the two teams played to a scoreless draw after regulation and two sudden death overtime periods. Thiel’s Heather Cozak tallied the winner after the teams tied 4-4 in the first shootout round.

Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) made one save in net for Alfred (0-1-1) while Jill Harry made four saves for Thiel (1-1-1).

In the second first-round game Saturday, Hilbert’s Maggie Fage scored the lone goal in Hilbert’s 1-0 win over Cazenovia. Fage’s goal, with 25 seconds left in the first half, came off an assist from Kayla Norman.

Hilbert outshot Cazenovia 15-4. Hilbert goalie Mary Zinni made two saves to earn the shutout, while Cazenovia netminder Brittany Westcott stopped five shots.

Alfred takes on Cazenovia in the consolation match at 4 p.m. Sunday, while Thiel and Hilbert square off for the title at 7 p.m.
