Cazenovia, AU share tournament title

ALFRED, NY – Host Alfred University and Cazenovia shared the title of the AU Invitational men’s soccer tournament, held over the weekend at Merrill Field.

Cazenovia and Alfred each finished 2-0 in the two-day tournament. Alfred defeated Thiel College, 2-0, Sunday afternoon, while Cazenovia beat Hilbert, 2-0, Sunday morning.

Freshman Rigel Johnson (Little Valley, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley) had a goal and an assist and freshman Tony Gai (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) netted a goal in Alfred’s win over Thiel. Freshman Sam Miller (Kinsman, OH/Badger) added an assist.

The Saxons (3-0) outshot Thiel 15-5 and spent most of the game in the Tomcats’ end of the field. AU sophomore Elliot Thorpe (Highlands Ranch, CO/Thunder Ridge) made one save in goal en route to his second shutout of the season. Thiel netminder Josh Hideg made seven saves.

Matt Gillis scored both goals in Cazenovia’s win over Hilbert, with the game-winner coming 4:55 into the contest. With his hat trick against Thiel Saturday, Gillis finished the tournament with five goals. Tim Hartill assisted on Gillis’s second goal, 21:29 into the second half.

Ryan Snyder started the game in goal for Cazenovia and made one save in 80 minutes of action. Riley Battaglini played the final 10 minutes in net and stopped one shot. Eric Davies and Scott Walker each played a half in goal for Hilbert and made five and four saves, respectively.

The all-tournament team is as follows: Gai and freshman forward Frankie Mannino (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) from Alfred; Matt Gillis and Ryan Snyder from Cazenovia; Greg Lake and James Knapp for Hilbert; and Derek Workman and Tim Smith for Thiel.
