Hilbert wins AU women’s soccer tournament; Lady Saxons take third
Alfred (1-1-1) went 1-0-1 in the two-day tournament, held Saturday and Sunday at Merrill Field. Hilbert beat Thiel, 1-0, Sunday evening to claim the tournament championship.
AU led Cazenovia 1-0 at the half, after outshooting the Wildcats 16-1 in the games’s first frame. For the contest, Alfred outshot Cazenovia 30-2 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) netted a pair of goals to lead Alfred. Freshman Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) added a goal and freshman Erika Garrett (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain) had an assist.
Sophomore Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansie Valley) played the first 81 minutes in goal for Alfred and wasn’t called on to make a save. Freshman Kari Blatz (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) played the final nine minutes in net and made one save. Brittany Westcott went the distance in goal for Cazenovia and made 12 saves.
In the championship match Hilbert’s Kayla Norman scored off a rebound with 13:14 minutes into the second half. Alyssa Hulbert was credited with the assist.
Mary Zinni got the shutout in net for Hilbert (3-0-0) but was not called upon to make a save, while Jill Harry stopped 10 shots in goal for Thiel (1-2-1).
The following players made the Al-Tournament Team: Moorehead and senior defender Carly Schrader (Vestal, NY/Vestal) from Alfred; Westcott and Ellie Argentieri from Cazenovia; Alyssa Hulbert and Carrie Sisson from Hilbert; and Jill Harry and Jamie Dawson from Thiel.
