Late touchdown lifts Saxons over FDU-Florham

MADISON, NJ – Sophomore quarterback Tom Secky (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) hit junior wideout Ryan Thon (Victor, NY/Victor) with a scoring pass with 27 seconds left in regulation, lifting the Alfred University football team to a dramatic 33-28 victory over host Fairleigh Dickenson-Florham Saturday afternoon.

After FDU took a 28-27 lead with 2:32 left, Secky led Alfred on a 10-play, 60-yard drive that ended with his third TD pass of the game, a 14-yard scoring strike to Thon. Alfred (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) won despite turning the ball over twice and allowing 401 yards offense to the host Devils.

The Saxons scored on their first possession, with senior tailback Vinson Hendrix (Rochester, NY/East) scoring from seven yards out to cap an eight-play, 42-yard drive 3:25 into the contest. FDU tied the game with 1:23 left in the opening frame when quarterback Bill Winters connected with wide receiver Lou Pietranglo on a 65-yard scoring pass.
The Saxons scored twice in the second quarter to take a 21-7 halftime lead. Hendrix, who rushed for 141 yards on 30 carries, scored his second touchdown of the game, from a yard out, to give the Saxons a 14-7 lead 2:30 into the second. With 4:25 left in the half, senior wide receiver Jared Manzer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Secky. FDU dominated play in the third, outscoring the Saxons 15-0 to take a one-point lead going into the fourth. A Winters 75-yard TD run with 11:31 left in the third and a Winters-to-Pietrangelo 28-yard scoring pass with 1:40 left, were sandwiched around a safety (Secky sacked in the endzone by John DiIorio).

AU reclaimed the lead 1:19 into the fourth when Secky tossed a 38-yard TD pass to senior wideout Milton Harding (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) to cap an eight-play 73-yard drive. The two-point conversion failed and Alfred led 27-22. The host team looked to have pulled off the upset when Winters found wide receiver Kyle Bukoviec on a 17-yard TD pass with 2:32 on the clock . The two-point try failed, giving the Devils a 28-27 lead and setting the stage for the Saxons’ last minute comeback.

Hendrix had his second 100-yard rushing day in as many games, leading a Saxon offense that produced 308 yards. Secky completed 15 of 32 pass attempts for 163 yards and three TDs, but was intercepted twice. Manzer and Thon each caught five passes for 64 and 42 yards, respectively.
The loss spoiled a monster day for FDU’s Winters, who finished with 358 yards of total offense. He ran 19 times for 118 yards and completed 23 of 39 passes for 240 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Bukoviec caught a game-high 10 passes for 78 yards, while Pietrangelo had six catches for 116 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Wes Smith (Turbotville, PA/Muncy) led Alfred’s defense with 14 tackles (nine solo), including a sack. Sophomore linebacker Nick Clark (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) had 11 stops, including one for loss, and senior end Adam Brockway (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) had seven tackles, including three for loss and a sack. Sophomore cornerback Roland O’Brien (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) and sophomore end Marcellus Jones (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each had six tackles. Senior linebacker Marc Mangovski (Kirkville, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) had an interception.

Jason Glezman had 11 tackles (nine solo) and Ian Moore added 10 to pace the FDU defense. Dan Labrutto had both Devil interceptions to go with three tackles.
