‘In Korea, in the Army’ to be topic of Bergren Forum

Otto Muller, professor of geology at Alfred University, will present “In Korea, In the Army, in 1967” on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at the Bergren Forum beginning at 12:10 p.m. in Powell Campus Center’s Nevins Theatre. This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Muller was in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) from December 1966-April 1968 when drafted into the U.S. Army. He served much of his time as a Civil Affairs Specialist, essentially working to improve “town-gown relations.”

During his forum, Muller will describe how he came to “love Korea and her people.” He will review what worked in terms of bridging cultural differences, what it was like to be conscripted during the Vietnam War, and how rock-climbing on the granite outcrops near Seoul builds friendships and character.

Muller graduated from the University of Rochester with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in geology. His teaching interests include earthquakes and volcanoes, elementary oceanography, field methods in geology, geochemistry, and the geology of Venus.

Muller’s current research studies include emplacement of igneous intrusions, the interpretation of gravity data and glacial and postglacial geomorphology.

The Bergren Forum, sponsored by the Alfred University Division of Human Studies, meets Thursdays during each academic semester at the University. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch; coffee and tea will be available.
