Emeritus professor to give reading of his published work

Benjamin Howard, professor emeritus of English at Alfred University. will deliver a reading from “Leaf, Sunlight, Asphalt,” his newest publication. at the Dormann Library in Bath at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

“Leaf, Sunlight Asphalt” is Howard’s sixth collection of poems. Salmon Poetry, an international poetry publisher based in County Clare, Ireland, published it in June 2009.

This publication includes poems set in Ireland, autobiographical poems set in eastern Iowa, and poems exploring themes from the Zen tradition. Also included are “Expecting Nothing,” written for the first initiation ceremony of the Alfred University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa; elegies for (the late) Robert Turner (Alfred University professor emeritus of ceramic art) and (the late) Carol Burdick (instructor emeritus of English); and “Right Livelihood,” written on the occasion of Howard’s retirement.

Howard earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Drake University, Des Moines, IA. He continued his education at Syracuse University where he received a master of arts degree English and creative writing and a Ph.D. in English literature.

This fall at AU, Howard is teaching an Honors Program course, The Art of Meditation.
