ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University football team remained unbeaten with a 38-16 victory over visiting St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon in the Saxons’ 2009 home opener.

Senior tailback Vinson Hendrix (Rochester, NY/East) ran for 165 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and has now rushed for more than 100 yards in each of Alfred’s three contests this year. Senior wide receiver Milton Harding (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) caught three touchdown passes and sophomore strong safety Alec Currier (Peru, NY/Peru) intercepted three passes as AU improved to 3-0 on the season with the non-conference victory.

Alfred scored on its opening possession, driving 69 yards in 11 plays, with sophomore quarterback Tom Secky (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) hitting Harding from nine yards out just 4:54 into the contest. Sophomore kicker Eric Rockwood (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) booted a 30-yard field foal with 5:11 left in the first to make it 10-0.

The Saxons pushed their lead to 17 when Secky connected with senior wideout Jared Manzer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) on a 46-yard scoring pass 3:26 into the second. The Saints got on the board with 5:18 left in the half when JP Kearney tossed a 28-yard TD pass to wide receiver Ethan Sutton. The Saxons answered just over a minute later when Harding caught a 49-yard scoring pass from Secky.

The Saints scored a safety with 28 seconds left in the half to make it 24-9 at intermission. After a Currier pick at the AU 4-yard line stopped a St. Lawrence drive, a snap from center went through the endzone, giving the Saints two points. On their ensuing possession, just before the end of the half, Kearney was intercepted by Currier for a third time.

AU put the game away with two scores in the third quarter. Hendrix scored on a 39-yard run with 10:20 left in the period capping a four-play, 72-yard drive. Harding caught his third TD pass of the day, a 28-yarder from Secky, with 6:46 left in the frame. For the day, Secky completed 15 of 27 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns.

St. Lawrence closed out the scoring with 5:37 left in the fourth. Sutton capped a 16-play, 94-yard drive with an 18-yard scoring pass from Kearney.
Manzer finished with six catches for 80 yards and a score and Harding with four catches for 98 yards and three TDs.

The Saints’ Kearney threw for 276 yards and two scores. Tailback Connor Hackett rushed for a team-best 36 yards on 14 carries as the Saxons held St. Lawrence to 70 yards on the ground.

Currier had five tackles (one-half for loss) to go with his three interceptions. Sophomore linebacker Nick Clark (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) had 14 tackles, including one for loss, and a forced fumble. Sophomore cornerback Roland O’Brien (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) made seven tackles and recovered a fumble, while freshman tackle Mike Raplee (Dundee, NY/Dundee) had a sack among his five tackles. Freshman safety Reggie Pressley (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) got his first career interception when he picked off St. Lawrence backup quarterback Andy Spadoni in the fourth quarter.

Defensive end Nate Howard paced the St. Lawrence defense with eight tackles (including two for loss and sack). Linebacker Ben Cryts and cornerback Louis Jenkins each had interceptions.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m. , when the Saxons play their Empire 8 Conference opener against visiting Springfield.
