AU volleyball team drops first two matches at Empire 8 tournament

ONEONTA, NY -- The Alfred University volleyball team lost a pair of matches Friday in the first day of action at the Empire 8 Conference tournament, being held this weekend at Hartwick College.

Alfred (0-11, 0-2 Empire 8) lost 3-0 to Elmira (25-13, 25-8, 25-9) and 3-0 to RIT (25-13, 25-18, 25-14). The Saxons play two more matches on Saturday: at 9:30 a.m. against Hartwick and at noon against Nazareth.

In the match against Elmira, junior Tara Quigley (Bluepoint, NY/Bayport-Bluepoint) had six kills and two blocks to pace AU. Sophomore Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had three kills and three digs; junior Erika Huyck (Forestville, NY/Forestville) had five digs and two blocks; and senior Emma Walsh (Lancaster, NY/Mt. St. Mary) had 11 assists.

Senior Emily Steen (South Pasadena, CA/Purnell) had eight kills, nine digs and three blocks to lead Alfred in the RIT match. Quigley added five kills, three digs and two blocks; Crosby had two kills, six digs and one block; and Walsh had 16 assists.

Each of the nine Empire 8 teams are playing four matches this weekend and will play four more at Nazareth the weekend of Oct. 23-25. The teams with the top four records from the two tournament weekends will play Nov. 7 at the home of the top-seeded team for the Empire 8 Conference crown and an automatic berth in the NCAA championships. Alfred will play Utica, Stevens, Ithaca and St. John Fisher in the tournament at Nazareth in October.
