AU cross country teams race at Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s cross country teams ran in the Houghton College Highlander Invitational Saturday. The AU men placed seventh of 12 teams competing and the Alfred women were fourth of eight.

Senior Corey Smith (Albion, N/Albion) was the Saxons’ top men’s runner, completing the eight-kilometer course in 28:02.50 to finish 41st. Sophomore Ken Noll (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) was 53rd in 28:22.00 and senior Jim Thierman (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) was 62nd in 28:41.70.

Sophomore Elisabeth Phillips-Jones (Watertown, NY/Watertown) led the AU women with a 22nd-place finish on the five-kilometer course (20:17.10). Junior Jen Chan (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley) was 26th (20:31.60) and junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga) was 27th (210:33.50).

The AU men’s and women’s teams will compete next on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Geneseo Invitational at Letchworth State Park.
