Diaspora Drumming trio slated to perform at Holmes Auditorium

Diaspora Drumming, a trio of drummers skilled in the music of the African Diaspora, will perform at Alfred University on Friday, Oct. 23. Admission is free to the event which takes place at 8 p.m. in Holmes Auditorium, on campus.

Members Ringo Brill, Tiffany Nicely, and Gabriel Gutierrez have studied in Africa, Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico and have dedicated themselves to performing percussion music from the African Diaspora. They seek to discover and share the underlying artistic and historical connections between the rhythms of Africa and Latin America and the way language and music changes over time and distance.

With African and Latin American cultures linked between drumming, song, and dance, the performance will follow the path of the development of music and different instruments from Western Africa to Cuba and Brazil. This act features a large selection of authentic percussion instruments as well as audience participation.

The Division of Performing Arts is sponsor of Diaspora Drumming’s visit to Alfred University.
