Alfred University musicians, faculty to present concert benefiting church organ
On Sunday Nov. 1, Alfred University’s Brass Choir will present an Organ and Brass Spectacular at 3 p.m. in the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church to benefit the church’s organ fund.
The concert will feature the AU’s brass choir, University Carillonneur Laurel Buckwalter as organist, and will be directed by Christopher Foster, associate professor of music and director of bands, who will also be performing as trumpet soloist.
A selection of nine pieces will be performed, including “Fanfare for the Common Man,” performed by the AU brass choir, and “Prayer of Saint Gregory,” performed by Foster as trumpeter and Buckwalter on the organ.
A free-will collection will be taken to benefit the Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Organ Renovation Fund. This is the third concert in as many years in an effort to raise $30,000 for needed repairs on the organ. The Moller organ at the church is essential for many choral works by the University and the church.
So far $25,000 has been raised and been put to use in a number of ways including the re-leathering of the great/choir bellows and the swell bellows, the replacement of the bellows switch and valve systems, and restoration of the wooden expression swell louvers. Any funds raised past the goal will go to repair and improvement of less critical items in the organ.
The Alfred Seventh Day Baptist Church is at 5 Church St. in the village of Alfred.
