AU men place ninth, women seventh, at state cross country championships

ROCHESTER, NY -- The Alfred University men's and women's cross country teams competed Saturday at the New York State championship meet, hosted by the University of Rochester.

The Alfred men took ninth of 10 teams competing on the eight-kilometer course. Senior Corey Smith (Albion, NY/Albion) was the Saxons' top runner, finishing 50th in 28:33.23. Senior Jesse Schuster (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) was 54th in 28:43.36, and senior Jim Thierman (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) was 53rd in 29:22.14.

The AU women placed seventh of 10 teams competing. Sophomore Elisabeth Phillips-Jones paced AU on the five-kilometer course, finishing 30th in 20:10.14. Junior Melissa Haahr (Tioga, NY/Owego) was 39th in 20:34.10 and junior Jen Chan (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley was 65th in 21:19.73.

The AU men and women are in action next on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Empire 8 championship meet at Saratoga.
