Eight students safe, displaced by fire
Eight Alfred University students are safe, but they have lost all their clothing and possessions in a fire that is still burning on Alfred’s Main Street.
Kathy Woughter, vice president for Student Affairs, said the eight students who were living in second-floor apartments above West Side Liquor, located on the corner of Main and West University streets, are “safe and accounted for,” but they escaped without any of their possessions.
There are other students who were living in second or third-floor apartments in Alfred’s main business block who may also be displaced by the fire, Woughter said.
All students who were displaced or otherwise affected by the fire are gathering in the Powell Campus Center where the University is providing counseling and assistance in finding housing, clothing and other necessities.
An on-campus announcement has already been sent, asking for donated clothing items and linens to be taken to the Student Affairs office in Carnegie.
