AU men’s basketball team edges Hobart in Dickinson Tournament title game

CARLISLE, PA — The Alfred University men’s basketball team used a late second-half comeback to beat Hobart College, 57-55, Saturday in the championship game of the Dickinson College Tournament.

Alfred trailed 55-49 with 2:16 to go before going on an 8-0 run to close the contest. AU junior point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) hit a three-pointer with 1:08 left to tie the game at 55-55 and senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) provided the winning points with a layup with 17 seconds left. Senior guard Ron Smith (Lyons, NY/Lyons) blocked a shot with a second left to preserve the victory.

Junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had 16 points, four rebounds and five assists and Patt finished with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Saxons, who have won three straight after a season-opening loss.

The contest was close throughout, with Hobart holding a 25-24 edge at the half. The Statesmen (1-2) held the game’s biggest (eight points) just over four minutes remaining, but were outscored 13-3 the rest of the way. Alfred outrebounded Hobart 37-30 and forced 13 Statesmen turnovers. Each team shot 40 percent from the floor, with Alfred making six three-point shots to Hobart’s three.

Smith finished with 10 points and Kwiecien with seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Matt Pebole (five rebounds) and Mark Bruce scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Hobart.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. at home against Wells.
