Saxons in second, AU women sixth, after two days at Don Richards Invitational

ROCHESTER, NY – Alfred University’s men’s team is in second place and the AU women are in sixth after the Saturday’s second day of action at the RIT-hosted Don Richards Invitational swimming and diving meet.

AU is among six men’s and women’s teams competing at the three-day meet, which concludes on Sunday; the others are Ithaca, Nazareth, RIT, LeMoyne and Hartwick. The Ithaca men are in first after Saturday’s events with 559 points, ahead of second-place AU (509.5 points points). Ithaca’s women lead with 693 points; the AU women are sixth with 169.

Senior Greg Pilgrim (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond) led the AU men Saturday with a win in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.56) and a second-place finish in the 100-yard fly (53.63 seconds). Senior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) was second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.19) and 100-yard free (47.87) and junior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) was third in the 200 free (1:48.07) and 100 free (48.07).

Other top swimmers for the AU men were: sophomore Andrew Moragne (Cleveland, OH/University), seventh in the 100 free (49.00) and ninth in the 100 fly (56.21); junior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), third (2:01.88) and sixth (55.18), respectively, in the 200-yard and 100-yard butterfly; sophomore Warren Dolben (Rye, NY/Berwick Academy), third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.65) and eighth in the 200-yard breast (2:22.96); sophomore Richard Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (56.61); junior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon), sixth in the 200-yard back (2:06.53); freshman Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), sixth in the 200-yard free (1:50.01); and sophomore Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley), seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:46.95).

The team of Chapman, Mix, Olsen and Brisson took second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:15.02).

Junor Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) took second in the 100-yard freestyle (54.88 seconds) and ninth in the 200-yard free (2:04.38) to lead the AU women.

Freshman Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) was 10th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:31.37) and freshman Shelby Remington (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth) was 10th in the 400-yard IM (5:20.57).

The AU women’s team of juniors Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) and Cailin Asmo (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City), freshman Tracy Miller (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Remington took sixth in the 800 free relay (8:53.27).
