AU men rally past Ithaca to take Don Richards Invitational; Saxon women place sixth
Alfred trailed Ithaca, 698.5 to 683, before the 400 free relay. The team of sophomore Andrew Moragne (Cleveland, OH/University), junior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) and seniors Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) and Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) won the relay in 3:13.99 and freshman Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), senior Greg Pilgrim (Almond, NY/Alfred-Almond), sophomore Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) and junior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) took seventh in 3:19.89. The Saxons earned 64 points in the relay, while Ithaca placed third and 10th to earn 46 points and allow AU to pull ahead.
Brisson took second in the 50-yard free (21.66 seconds) and Chapman was second in the 500-yard free (4:56.00) to help lead the Saxon men on Sunday. Olsen (5:04.04)and junior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) (5:08.12) took fourth and 10th, respectively in the 500 free; Moragne (21.95 seconds) and Steere (22.96) were fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 50 free; Mix (2:03.82) and Dolben (2:10.75) were third and eighth, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley. In Sunday’s opening event, the AU team of Brisson, Dolben, Pilgrim and Olsen won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:38.17.
The AU women scored 258 points to place sixth; Ithaca was first with 933 points and Nazareth was second with 852.
Junior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) led the Lady Saxons Sunday, taking second in the 50-yard free (24.60 seconds).
Sophomore Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), freshmen Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Blair took sixth in the 400 medley relay (4:28.80) and Blair, senior Meghan Jones (Beaver Falls, NY/Beaver River), freshman Shelby Remington (Gainesville, NY/Letchworth) and junior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) were sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:57.56).
The AU men and women are in action next on Friday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. when they host an Empire 8 Conference dual meet against Utica.
