AU’s Manzer, Hendrix earn regional honors from

ALFRED, NY — Jared Manzer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Vinson Hendrix (Rochester, NY/East), seniors on the Alfred University football team, have earned regional recognition from, a leading website covering Division III college football.

Manzer, a wide receiver/free safety, was named to the East Region First Team, while Hendrix, a tailback, was named to the Third Team.

The 2009 Empire 8 Player of the Year, Manzer caught 65 passes for 1,046 yards and a school single-season record 15 touchdowns. As a free safety, he had five interceptions and on special teams he averaged 20.5 yards on kick returns and 10.4 yards on punt returns. His 195 all-purpose yards per game ranks second in the nation. Manzer won First Team Empire 8 honors as a receiver, defensive back and all-purpose runner and Second Team honors as a return man. He will leave Alfred holding single-season and career records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches.

Hendrix rushed 251 times for 1,339 yards and 11 touchdowns and averaged 5.3 yards per carry and 133.9 yards per game (ninth in the country). He also caught 17 passes for 170 yards and a pair of scores. A First Team Empire 8 all-star this season, Hendrix will leave Alfred ranked second in career rushing yards (3,534). His 1,406 yards rushing in 2007 is the school’s single-season record.

Manzer and Hendrix recently wrapped up stellar careers for the Saxons, who this season earned the school’s first-ever Empire 8 Conference title and its first NCAA playoff appearance in 28 years. Alfred went 8-2 (4-1 Empire 8) and lost to Albright, 35-25, in the first round of the NCAA Division III championship tournament.
