Saxons top Penn State-Abington, 78-64

ABINGTON, PA -- The Alfred University men's basketball led host Penn State-Abington by a single point at halftime before pulling away after intermission and securing a 78-64 victory Tuesday afternoon.

AU (6-3, 0-1 Empire 8) led 28-27 at haltime. The Saxons made eight three-point shots and converted 14 of 16 free-throw attempts en route to outscoring the host Lions 50-37 in the second half. For the game, AU made 13 three-pointers and connected on 19 of 22 foul shots while forcing 16 Penn State-Abington turnovers. Alfred turned the ball over only six times and held a slight 41-38 rebounding edge.

Junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a game-high 25 points and handed out four assists to lead AU. Senior guard Bobby Barry (Duanesburg, NY/Duanesburg) netted 23 points to go with four rebounds and a pair of assists and sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Ontario Center, NY/Wayne) logged a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Barry and Stopera made six and five three-points shots, respectively.

Joshua Howard had 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to lead Abington. Corey Curtis and William Alton netted 22 and 20 points, respectively.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m. at home against Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher.
