AU women's basketball team falls to unbeaten Mount Union

WAYNESBURG, PA -- The Alfred University women's basketball team played unbeaten Mount Union tough, but came up short in a 65-58 loss Tuesday evening at the Waynesburg University Tournament.

AU (5-3, 0-1 Empire 8) trailed at the half, 35-32. Mount Union (10-0) led by as many as eight after intermission but Alfred stayed close to the end, when Mount Union made six free throws in the final two minutes to earn the win.

Both teams shots 23 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 20 times. Mount Union outrebounded Alfred 49-39 and made 14 foul shots to seven for the Lady Saxons.

Senior guard Lisa Button (Troupsburg, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg had a team-high 11 points for Alfred. Junior forward Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) had seven points and nine rebounds and junior guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) and senior forward Alysha Dias (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) each scored eight points.

Tessa Pahovey had a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) to lead Mount Union. Amanda Rose added a game-high 17 points.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 3 p.m. at the Waynesburg Tournament, when the Lady Saxons take on the host team. AU plays on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 6 p.m. at home against Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher.
