Saxons top Utica, 66-60

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team defeated Utica, 66-60, Friday night in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

The Saxons led, 31-30, at the end of the first half, out-shooting Utica 48 percent to 32 percent. AU led throughout the second half, and held a six-point lead with just under three minutes remaining before Utica drew within three points (59-56) with a minute left. The Saxons converted seven of eight free throws in the final 47 seconds to secure the win and complete a season sweep of the Pioneers.

For the game, AU shot 46 percent and Utica shot 35 percent. The Saxons made 85 percent of their free throws (22 of 26), while Utica made only 40 percent (six of 15).

Junior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a game-high 19 points and junior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) netted 11 points and three assists to pace Alfred (10-12, 3-10 Empire 8). Senior forward Jared Patt (Nelson, PA/Elkland) added eight points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman center Bryan Bobo (Ontario, NY/Wayne) and freshman guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) each chipped in with eight points.

Patrick Goodman scored a game-high 21 points and brought down a game-high 11 boards to lead the Pioneers (7-14, 2-10 Empire 8). James Paterson added 13 points and a game-high four assists and Kevin Johnson netted eight points.

Alfred plays next on Tuesday, Feb.16, at 8 p.m. at RIT.
