Women’s basketball team knocks off Elmira

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women’s basketball team beat visiting Elmira, 62-54, Friday evening at the McLane Center.

Alfred (10-14, 4-11 Empire 8) had a 27-20 lead at the half and led throughout most of the game before Elmira rallied from eight points down to take a two-point lead, 41-39, with 8:52 left. Alfred then went on a 9-2 run over the 2:30 to take a 50-43 lead and outscored the Soaring Eagles 12-11 the rest of the way.

Alfred shot 42 percent from the floor while holding Elmira (4-19, 2-12 Empire 8) to 35 percent shooting to help offset a 41-29 rebounding disadvantage. Junior point guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) scored a game-high 24 points with two boards, two assists and two steals to lead Alfred. Sophomore guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) had 19 points on seven-of-13 shooting and senior forward Hannah Meier (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) had four points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Erin Rupell had 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Elmira. Tesia Kaczynski and Amanda Lawlor each netted nine points.

Alfred plays its season finale Sunday, Feb. 21, at noon against visiting Nazareth
