AU track and field teams perform well in final meet before states

ROCHESTER, NY – Several members of the Alfred University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams turned in solid performances Saturday at the RIT-hosted Last Chance Invitational meet, the final tune-up for next weekend’s New York State indoor championships.

Junior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) was the lone event winner for the Alfred men, placing first the shot put (14.70 meters). He was among several Saxons to place in the top 10, as sophomore Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden) was second in the 400-meter run (52.05 seconds) and third in the 200-meter run (23.11 seconds), and junior Markenson Joseph (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth Regional) was third in the weight throw (14.76 meters).

Other top performers for the AU men were: senior Matt Phillips (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), third in the 500-meter run (1:08.70); senior Lee Consolo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), sixth in the 500 meters (1:09.07) and eighth in the 200 meters (23.82 seconds); senior Jesse Schuster (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda), sixth in the 3,000-meter run (9:43.97); sophomore Evan Roush (Newport, PA/Newport), sixth in the triple jump (12.99 meters); freshman Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) and sophomore Justin Shardlow (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond), seventh (6.18 meters) and ninth (6.09 meters), respectively, in the long jump; and freshman Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic), eighth in the 55-meter dash (6.96 seconds).

Senior Megan Crimmins (Big Flats, NY/Horseheads) led the Alfred women with a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run (11:08.77). Freshman Emily Moorehead (Waverly, NY/Waverly) was fifth in the weight throw. Her throw of 13.06 meters broke the AU indoor record of 13.01 meters set by Elizabeth Menter in 2002.

Freshmen Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Alledale-Columbia) and Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell) each placed in the top-10 in two events for the Saxons. Larkins was sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.97 seconds) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (28.96 seconds) and Morrissey was seventh in the 200-meter dash (28.75 seconds) and third in the 400 meters (1:04.94).

Other top performers for the AU women were: junior Melissa Haahr (Owego, NY/Tioga), fifth in the 800-meter run (2:35.90); senior Rachel Gaylord (Elmira, NY/Horseheads), sixth in the 1,000 meters (3:16.06); junior Jen Chan (Angelica, NY/Genesee Valley), fifth in the 3,000 meter (11:42.89); and freshmen Kelly-Jo Beck (York, NY/York) and Kirstin Cook (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East), ninth (9.63 meters) and tenth (9.49 meters), respectively, in the shot put.

The state championship meet will be Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26 and 27, at RIT.
