AU western equestrian team wraps up regular season; 10 riders qualify for regionals

PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University Western equestrian team competed in a pair of shows Sunday, Feb. 21 at Lehman Farms in Pittsford, NY, hosted by SUNY Oswego. AU won Sunday’s first show and placed third in the second show; there were five teams competing in each show.

Senior Kristen Kovatch (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) was named champion high point rider of the first show after placing first in both reining and open horsemanship.

Freshman Kristin Eklin (Bovey, MN) placed first in novice horsemanship in the opening show. Senior Lauren Pfeifer (Livonia, NY/Livonia) was second in reining; sophomore Kaitlyn Bentley (Jamestown, NY) was second in intermediate horsemanship; and junior Peter Metz (Syracuse, NY) was second in beginner horsemanship.

In the second show, senior Nick Munch (Freeville, NY) earned Alfred’s lone first-place ribbon with a win in intermediate horsemanship. Placing second for AU were Kovatch in reining, Eklin in novice horsemanship, and Metz in beginner horsemanship.

Alfred finished third in the team standings in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region II, with Kovatch earning Reserve High Point River honors for the region. She advances to compete in reining and open horsemanship at the regional championship show March 17 at Cazenovia College.

Other AU riders advancing who have qualified to compete at regionals are: Pfeifer in reining; senior Alicia Pickett-Hale (Concord, NH/Concord) in advanced horsemanship; Eklin, junior Hannah Certis (Varysburg, NY), and senior Michelle Applebaum (Applegate, CA/Maidu) in novice horsemanship; junior Brittany Biegel (Ridge, NY/Longwood), sophomore Kate LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs) and senior Charity Chaffee (Auburn, NY/Auburn) in intermediate horsemanship; and Munch in beginner horsemanship.
