AU’s Murphy named First Team Empire 8 Conference all-star

ALFRED, NY — Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) a junior point guard on the Alfred University women’s basketball team, has been named a First Team Empire 8 Conference all-star.

Murphy, who also earned First Team Empire 8 honors last season, averaged 15 points per game (third in the conference) to go with 2.6 assists per contest (10th in the league). Her 2.44 three-point shots made per game led the Empire 8 and her .812 free throw percentage ranked fourth.

In 2008-09, her first season after transferring to Alfred from St. John Fisher, Murphy became Alfred’s first-ever First Team conference selection. This season, she led the Saxons to a 10-15 records (4-12 Empire 8), scoring in double figures in 19 of 25 contests overall and 13 of 16 Empire 8 games. Her 15.6 points per game in Empire 8 games ranked second in the conference and her .839 free-throw percentage was third.

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Alfred’s women’s basketball honoree is senior forward Danielle Cooper (Reading, PA/Reading).
