Saxons open season with two wins in Florida

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team won its first two games of the 2010 season, defeating Finlandia, 10-1, and Penn State-Beaver, 9-1, Monday in Cocoa Beach, FL.

In the opener against Finlandia, stopped after five innings, junior Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) got the pitching victory, going the distance and allowing an unearned on three hits whiled striking out four. Cary also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run, a stolen base and an RBI.

Sophomore outfielder Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had a double and scored a run; sophomore Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) had a run-scoring single, scored twice and stole two bases; junior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) went 2-for-3 with a run scored; senior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) had a hit, scored a run and stole two bases; senior outfielder Shannon Mather (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) had a base hit and scored once; and senior second baseman Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) walked twice and scored two runs.

Hedrick got the complete-game pitching win against Penn State-Beaver — in a game stopped after six innings —allowing an unearned run on six hits. She went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.

Folts was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs; LeBarron was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored; Shepherd had a hit and two runs driven in; sophomore outfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NY/Mother Seton Regional) went 2-for-3 with a run scored; and freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) had a hit and a run scored.

AU plays two games today (Tuesday, March 9) in Cocoa Beach: at 11 a.m. against Upper Iowa and 3 p.m. against Southern Vermont. Also in Cocoa Beach, the Saxons play Wednesday at 9 a.m. against Carlow; Thursday at 11 a.m. against Castleton State and 5 p.m. against Mercy College; and Friday at 9 a.m. against Felician and 11 a.m. against Mercy.
