Cary tosses no-hitter as Saxons split two in Florida

COCOA BEACH, FL – The Alfred University softball team split a pair of games Tuesday in Cocoa Beach, FL. The Saxons, on their annual Spring Break trip to Florida, lost 2-1 to Division II Upper Iowa, then rebounded to beat Southern Vermont, 8-0 in five innings.

Alfred’s Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) tossed a no-hitter in the win over Southern Vermont. The junior, who threw a no-hitter in her first start in Florida last season, struck out nine and walked one.

Freshman catcher Emily Fenton (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) went 2-for-2 with a three-run homerun and senior third baseman Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) went 2-for-2 and scored twice. Sophomore outfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NY/Mother Seton Regional) went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and scored a run.

Sophomore pitcher Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) was the hard-luck loser in the loss to Upper Iowa. She hurled a complete game, allowing two unearned runs on four hits while striking out two and walking four. Hedrick was 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base.

Sophomore outfielder Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun and LeBarron had a hit in three at-bats.

The Saxons’ spring trip continues today (Wednesday, March 10) at 9 a.m. against Carlow; Thursday at 11 a.m. against Castleton State and 5 p.m. against Mercy College; and concludes Friday at 9 a.m. against Felician and 11 a.m. against Mercy.
